What Happened:
In 2017, Ty Whitehead was training for an AIDS ride in the Oakland hills when his bike wheel struck a deep pothole on Skyline Boulevard, throwing him over his handlebars. He was in a coma for two weeks, suffered permanent brain damage, and never returned to work. Nearly a decade later, he gets by on Social Security and disability. The active, socially rich life he built around cycling is gone entirely.
“My accident ended a huge part of my life. My life completely changed in almost every way.”
